Rep. Dave Obey leads House tribute to Gaylord Nelson
WASHINGTON — As Rep. Dave Obey told the story Wednesday, Earth Day sprang from a very simple idea. At the height of "an unpopular and unwinnable war," Obey recalled, then-Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin urged Americans in a speech at the Seattle Science Center to take one day to devote the same passionate civic activism they used against the Vietnam War to demand better stewardship of the environment.
